Set against a backdrop of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Wildwind sprawls across rolling hills of sage, wildflowers and red rock. Neat barns and white fenceing decorate the landscape, while the colorful Victorian house dominates the scene. An iron sign arches over the gravel drive like a banner, the words Wildwind Stable are entwined with the barn's logo-a soaring owl with a heart-shaped face.

Wildwind started with one woman and her trail horse, and has steadily grown into the place it its today. We're known for working mounts that double as show horses, as well as taking in the occasional rescue. The barn doubles as a small trail guild business, open to tourists, hunters, and horsemen looking to enjoy the beauty of the west from the back of man's oldest companion. We have horses with a variety of temperaments for every rider, but every equine in the barn is sane and athletic, often times doing double-duty in the show ring. We're currently specializing in western style riding, with a focus on trail and equicaching, and combined driving.

Every region has it's infamous auctions-parking lots full of double-deckers bound for Mexico and rings full of the old, the young, the untrained, and unwanted-and we're no exception. We're not entirely sure how Oz wound up in such dire straights (even run down, he was clearly one of those "slipped through the cracks" horses) but by then he was lean, angry, and antisocial. There was a lot of frantic phone calls made that morning, and a near miss, but by the time the afternoon rolled out, he was added to our rosters.

Time, good food, and gentle hands have turned the skinny bitter yearling into the fine young stallion we saw hiding under that red fuzz. Diligent work of another sort has finally helped us track down his bloodlines; our Oz is the registered AQH Strawberry Wine, a great-grandson of Strawberry Silk, by Wine and Dine, out of Chocolate Strawberry.

These days, Oz is leading a much comfier life hitting the trails around Wildwind.

She had been heavy in foal, but not overdue and showing no signs of labor, and there was no reason at all to deny her a few nice spring nights in the paddock. Cricket's first foal was a surprise and delight to everyone when we found not one, but two bright eyed babies that foggy morning. Magic was a strong, energetic and troublesome foal who lived up to his mama's reputation for mischief. He's grown into a cow-y, independent stallion already exceeding his dam's western pleasure record.

We'd been looking for a quiet little mare to start teaching young family members their horse sense for some time. When a friend from Texas told us she had our horse, but we had to see her to believe it, we were a little suspicious (and at 16 hands, Tex is no little mare). After a quick trip east, we were told the full story: Tex and her sister Ghost came from a krazy kolor breeder and self-styled rodeo queen and "poor, drab Tex" was her burning disappointment. She was tossed in a back paddock and left there for years. Years later, the ASPCA seized Tex, Ghost and half a dozen more; the girls wound up with Erin, and Tex quickly proved to be a stellar horse despite her past. Tragedy struck again, when the economy forced Erin to start downsizing, but her loss is our gain!

After a particularly outrageous accident at an Austin rodeo, the ASPCA began looking into Ghost's owner and started seizing animals.

Erin assured us that Ghost had been showing improvement, and we decided we couldn't bear to break the sisters up after their ordeal. We're hoping a little TLC will help Ghost get back on her feet, but either way Ghost and Tex will be staying with Wildwind for a long, long time.

Mirage was a rather sickly baby, and while she's healthy and up to a good weight today, she's still a hard keeper. Mirage is a bit on the shy side with new situations, but generally mellow. This girl is pure racer, she loves to fly and moves like a dream; like her dam, we try to keep her a versatile mount but her spooky personality coupled with her high headset means less than stellar marks in our usual WP and trail combo.

Jubi joined us first as a boarder, but when her owner fell ill and could no longer ride or look after their young lady, we agreed to buy her. It's a great situation for all, now, her previous owner visits when she can, and we got to keep a sweet, attractive little lady where she was happy.
